Portland Head lighthouse is Maine's oldest lighthouse. Construction on this lighthouse was ordered by President George Washington, in 1787. The 80 foot tower was completed in 1791, and the first keeper was Captain Joseph Greenleaf. The light was automated in August of 1989. This lighthouse is my favorite of all lighthouses, and is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. Personally, I find it amazing how different the lighthouse looks, when viewed by either side, and also the front.
