Muscovy Ducklings are so cute...it's amazing how they walk just after birth...and yet can also climb a high sidewalk curb on their way to the lake. They all wait for all the eggs to hatch, group together, and off their go to start their young lives. Unfortunately, so few ducklings survive to adulthood...they are quite helpless in their first weeks of life. One group that was born at this nearby lake, had 17...but only one survived within just 4 fours. Nature is hard, but for those who make it, what a treat to have had to opportunity to watch them grow...and to see their "first flight".

***I took this photo at the nearby small lake near my apartment on January 6, 2004. There were nine ducklings born out of 11 eggs. This photo was taken about one hour after their birth.
