Bodie Island Lighthouse is located in Dare county. It sits on a granite foundation that is set atop iron pilings and pine timbers. It has black and white horizontal bands for its daymark. The lighthouse was built in 1872. The tower is 163 feet tall, The lighthouse was automated in 1931. The lantern retains its original lens with its twice-a-minute whiter flashes shining out to a distance of eighteen miles.
