Assateague Lighthouse was built in 1867. It has a 142-foot stone tower. In 1961, an automated aero-marine beacon replaced the old first-order Fresnel lens. The beacon light can be seen from more than twenty miles at sea.
***Directions: Take U.S. Highway 13 and Route 175 to Chincoteague; then follow the signs to the chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island. A quarter-mile trail leads from the lighthouse parking lot to the base of the tower.
